Most managers believe their staff are there to serve them, and help make them look good.
My approach to leadership is the exact opposite. I tell my team ‘How can I serve you better?’ What can I do to make life better for you today? When I explain this concept to new hires for my business, most people look at me with a strange face thinking ‘is this guy for real?’.
My job as a leader is to make my team more successful. “How may I be of service to you? Would you like some coaching, mentoring, more leads, more resources, a neck massage or a coffee (just joking on the last 2)”
If they are successful, motivated, happy and rewarded well, ultimately we both benefit. I also love helping others ‘be better’, ’do better’ and be more successful at work and in life, so maybe thats unique in itself.
